Login difficulties with mouse (XP PRO SP2)

A few days ago my computer started exhibiting odd behavior right after
booting up. When I am presented with the login screen, and I click on my user
name, the password box 1 appears for a split second, and then disappears. I
discovered that by pressing the down arrow key, I can get the password prompt
to stay and then login.

Once I have pressed the down arrow key, the mouse clicks work again, I can
move between different users with the mouse.

Also, if I logout , and get the login screen again, the mouse will work.
This only happens after a boot or reboot.

I am not sure what caused this, the only unusual thing that has happened in
the past few days is that, accidentally, I hit some sequence of keys that
popped up a narrator screen, which I guess is there for the visually
impaired. I closed it, and it hasn't reappeared, but perhaps this is related.

Hi William,

Thanks for your help. I couldn't see anything in the search that applied to
my situation. This is a Logitech mouse, connected to the PS/2 port with the
usual USB->PS/2 adapter. The keyboard is also not wired. It's a Dual CPU
Athlon 2400 MP's, with a Gigabyte motherboard. It worked fine for several
days after upgrading to SP2.

It's a strange problem.
