logging onto my laptop

yesterday, my mates young fella was supposed to be playing solitaire on my
laptop.
Today when i start my computer, a window appears with my name with the
heading "log on to windows" with my name and a password field. This has only
just started, prior to this windows started automatically and my desktop
appeared. How do I get my computer to load up normally?, and the desktop
icons occasionally do not show for a number of minutes. I presume once the
first problem is fixed it will fix the second problem. Hope someone can help!

How did your "mate" log onto your desktop, did he sign on as a User
or did he use your Administrator logon?

i don't know, the laptop was running when he started playing solitaire as I
had been working on it. He was left to play the game and must have been
playing around with more than he should have.
The laptop was off when I went to use it a couple of hours later, this is
when the pop up started and was asking for a password, which has never been
the case before hand.
I questioned him later the same day and was told he only shut down the
laptop and did not touch anything else in the system.
The laptop still works, it is just annoying that I now have to press enter
for it to start up.

Do a system restore about one day prior to when your "mate"
screwed it up. Tell him to buy his own laptop to play games....period.
Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools>System Restore.

thankyou for your assistance, my laptop stopped working completely so i had
it restored to factory settings. Evidently what started the whole process was
the installation of the windows xp home to xp pro. There was a driver file
missing on the upgrade CD. The technician has informed me that to upgrade my
laptop i should have gone back to the manufacturer as they have the correct
upgrade packages for their laptops. It will cost three times the price but
will definately load correctly. I am staying with the basic XP home version
that came with the computer.
Thanks again.
