I recently made the mistake of trying to upgrade my ME OS
to 2000 Pro. I did this before I discovered that this is
not a supported upgrade path. Everything seemed to be
going well and it even completed successfully. Now when I
attempt to log in, I enter my password (for the proper
user name), I immediatrely get a notification that says
there is "insufficient system resources exist to complete
the requested service". I click on OK and another box
appears that says "Windows cannot load your profile.
Please increase the registry size and restart the
computer." Click OK on that one then a final dialog box
appears that says "Windows cannot load the user's profile
but has logged you on with the default profile for the
system. DETAIL - Insufficient system resources exist to
complete the requested service."
It also does the same thing when I try to use the
administrator account. I know the passwords are correct
because I intentionally tried to use the wrong ones and i
get a meassage that says they are wrong.
Anyone know how i can bypass this password issue and get
into the system so I can restore my ME or at the vey least
try to increase the registry size. Any help would be
greatly appreciated.

As you say, upgrading from WinME to Win2000 is not
supported. Reloading from scratch would give you a stable,
rock-solid operating system rather than something that is
full of bugs and flaws that can be difficult to trrace.

thanks for your reply. I would gladly do a scratch install
if I figure out to get into the system to do it. As i
stated previously, it will not allow me into the system so
my original request still applies. Any idea how i can
bypass the password requirement so I do the install from
scratch? Thanks

See the item "using the bootdisk and installing windows2000",
posted in this newsgroup at the same time as yours!

If you have a boot disk with FDisk on it, you are on your
way. Use FDisk to delete and recreate partions on your
hard drive then boot to the W2k setup Cd. It will format
the drive and install the OS cleanly.

Mike,

From where you are, you can do an inplace upgrade by doing the following:

Go into the BIOS and change the first boot device to your CD-ROM.

Put the CD in the tray and power down.
Boot with the CD and choose to Install 2000 (not repair). At the prompt further along the CD
will offer a last time to Install or Repair. Choose Repair.

You will need your C.D. Key before you get through. It will load all the files the same as
if it were a new install, but you may need to change some items to do with ME later. But it
should work fine. If it gives you trouble, post again and we will deal with the exact error,
etc. But it gets you up enough to get any data off that you may lose from a clean install.
WAB(address book(s)). Favorites, ini(s), hardware make and models (for drivers), etc.
