Log On

hi,

I have been given a laptop by a company that no longer required it but when
I log on, because it was a shared computer I am only getting 3.41gb of the
40gb it has available. I went into the computer help and it said to go into
the 'users & passwords' in the Control Panel and uncheck 'the Users must
enter a user name and password to use this computer' and then it should work.
But because I do not have administrative rights the box does not appear.
How do I get around this as I cannot get the password to log on as an
administrator to the computer?

Thanks! :)

When you buy a car then you always get the keys for that car.
Without the keys the car is not much good.

When you get a PC then you always get the administrator's
password. Without that password you cannot use the PC
properly.

In other words, ask the company who gave you the PC to
also give you the administrator's password. At the same time
ask them to give you the Win2000 CD and the product key.
You will need both of them sooner or later!

I now have administrative rights and the administrator password but the
option is still not there. Any suggestions?

the option in "user and passwords" in the control panel that lets you uncheck
"the users must enter a user name and password to use this computer"

I can think of several reasons why this option might not
be visible:
- You're running an operating system other than Win2000.
- Your account does not have administrative privileges.
- Your Windows installation is damaged, corrupt or infected.

You can walk around the problem by using the TweakUI
utility. It is freely downloadable from some Microsoft sites.
