log on probklems after windows updates

this is my 2nd attempt at trying to post this, I got a google groups
server error last time (ever get the feeling you crossed some deity
earlier that day...?)

I suddenly can't log on to my laptop (DELL Inspiron 9300).

A blue screen gives me this error message: " STOP: c0000221{Bad Image
checksum} The image wininet.dll is possibly corrupt. Header checksum
doesn't match computed checksum"

I can't even boot in Safe Mode. Not sure what happened, but as I last
logged off there were 6 Windows updates.

Using Google I found a solution which involved using the Windows XP CD,
but my laptop didn't come with that, it was pre-loaded (I am in
Ireland, maybe that's how they are shipped here).

Is there another solution, I've tried all the modes and can't get past
that screen/message.

any help gratefully accepted ....

You can use anyone's Windows XP CD to access the Recover Mode.

Have you tried Safe Mode Command Prompt or Last Known Good Configuration. I
know you said you tried all modes ... I'm just double-checking.

WinInet.DLL should not come into play with Safe Mode Command Prompt.

Thanks, Yes, I'll try and find one, although the number of people I
know who got it pre-loaded on their PCs is surprisingly high.

yes, tried all those and 1 or 2 others, all the options in fact, they
all brought me to that screen
WinInet.DLL should not come into play with Safe Mode Command Prompt.

that's a bit worrying :-/ ah well, fingers crossed ......
