Log on OK, See Windows XP logo, then nothing, no desktop or icons

I have windows XP Pro and until yesterday all worked fine with 3 internal
Harddrives, 1 a SATA, 2 other WD 80 GB set to slave.

I can see the POST in starting up, also the windows XP logo but then no
desktop, no icons, just a blank, black screen.

But I also hear the windows startup sound before the latter happens.

I am absolutely puzzled and appreciate help or advice.

Thanks in advance

Enter the Safe Mode Boot options and select "Enable VGA Mode", then
reinstall your video drivers. Use the latest video drivers supplied by the
video card manufacturer's web site.

Came across this once, user had been performing restore when power
went, got the same result, desktop and nothing else, no start button
icons......... brought up task manager (Control Alt Delete), shutdown,
then restarted and all ok.

If you didn't have this problem may not work for you, but 30sec to find
out...
