log off in start menu

With XP sp3 home edition is there any way to get rid of the "log off" in the
Start Menu and still have the classic blue shut down window when you shut
down. I'd much prefer to keep the blue shut down window rather than have
the Drop Down window appear with all the options.

_Using TweakUI_

Get TweakUI, a powertoy from Microsoft for Windows XP. Under the Explorer
node in the tree list, deselect the option to show the Logoff entry in the
Start menu.

_Registry editing_

Go into the registry to the following key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\
Explorer

Add a new binary data item called "NoLogOff" and give it a value of:

01 00 00 00

_Setting a policy_

Run the policy editor (gpedit.msc) and go to the following node:

User Configuration -> Adminstrative Templates -> Start Menu and Taskbar

Disable the "Add Logoff to the Start Menu" setting.

Vanguard, in TWEAKUI I unchecked the"Allow Logoff in Start menu" but it
didn't help. Then I made the entry in the Registry with the same results.
Don't know where the Policy Editor is so can't try that. Any other
suggestions?

Those are the only methods that I know of. Each results in setting a data
item's value in the registry.

So did you ever reboot the host and then check if the change was effected?

Vanguard, Yes, I rebooted every time. But no joy.

Some security programs will lockout changes to Windows. That's because
malware can make those same changes. You have to disable the lock by the
security program, make the change, and then relock.
