Log off and shut down

I have only had my computer for a little over a month and
I have been having problems since day one. Every time I
try to log off my name and my daughter trys to log on or
visa versa or when we log off at night, my computer takes
an unusually long time to switch names or shut down.
There are times that when we are trying to switch names
that the screen goes completely blank, the light that
says something is happening constantly glows but nothing
happens and I have to hold in the power button to shut
down. Can anyone send me in the right direction as to
what is going on with this computer??? Thanks.

A regular part of closing out a user or shutting down is
flushing unwritten registry changes to the hard drive.
(Windows uses a deferred update system to keep from having
to rewrite the entire registry every time you [or some
piece of software] makes a settings change, because the
registry is a pretty large file.) This was usually the
cause of most shut-down or log-over hangups in Win98 and
WinME, but I haven't heard of it happening much in WinXP.

It's also possible that one or more programs you might
have running at the time you try to log off are responding
to the shutdown request (WM_QUERYENDSESSION) with a "no,"
which will keep the computer from shutting down, but I
can't imagine what those might be--there aren't too many
of them a regular home user would have running.

On the other hand, maybe one of your quick-startup tray
apps is having a hairball during shutdown and hanging up
the PC. Try eliminating one or more of them and shutting
down (or logging over to your daughter's desktop) to see
if that might be the problem.

The only other thing that comes to mind is a corrupt
registry, but that doesn't seem like the first thing to
suspect.

If it's less than a month old and has been having problems since day 1, take
it back where you bought it and tell them that.
