I purchased this laptop with the software already loaded.
I do not have the password or username to log in. Is there
any way to override the NT log in option? I have tried
loading XP, but again the computer stops at the log in
step.

Was the laptop bought new from a dealer or builder or did it
come from a previous owner? For the former, read the manual or
call the seller. There might be an initial new owner's setup
login sequence that might need to be completed. If bought used,
get the administrator's password from the previous owner. And
post back if neither solution works.

To install Windows XP, the machine should be able to boot off
the Windows XP cdrom unless it is bios passworded.

The laptop was used. The person I bought it from does not
know the password. Also, The computer will not boot from
the XP cdrom. I place the cd in the computer, reboot, and
the same sequence happens. It loads to the NT screen where
I am prompted for a user name and password. Very
Frustrating!!

You need to boot from the CD, not let the m/c boot from the HDD. You'll need
to change your BIOS settings to use the CDROM as the first boot device. Then
you can do a clean install of XP.

There are 4 settings for CDs. 1 Disconexion, 2 syncrone datas transfer , 3 notification of automatic insertion, 4 DM
Which must be used in addition to number 3
