locking up

Please help if anyone knows the dell inspiron 8200, every
time after using it fine for a whole day then I exit
properly, I switch it off, then 8 out of ten times I
switch it back on the computer locks up, the lights come
on stay on for 5 seconds then go's off whats wrong? it is
a lap top 2.4 gig 60 meg hd 512 ram all my software is
fine it's windows xp & my start up programs are fine,
please help, is this a software problem or hardware
problem?
