Locked computer

Hi,
A friend has a computer that is "locked" and she usually
has to click out of the a dialog box that appears. I know
that one can create a lock with the Windows key and L.
Nowhere can I find how to unlock a computer. Can anyone
explain what is going on and how to avoid the condition?
Thanks,
Carol

Press F8 repeatedly at computer start-up to boot to the Bootmenu and select
Safe Mode. Then use the Administrator account. Once into the Safe Mode
Desktop go to Control Panel->User accounts and reset the password for the
account she usually logs on with.

To unlock the computer, all you should need to do is press
<Ctrl>+<Alt>+<Del>, and enter the password of the individual who was
logged in at the time the workstation was locked. Alternatively, any
administrative account can unlock the workstation in the same manner.
