Lockdown Outlook EXE with a password

Chris

I have a small network running XP clients. On an executive admins PC,
I have installed Outlook 2003 and am using it to connect POP3 to
retrieve mail from a business account. She is complaining that people
might be able to look at the sensitive information if someone can just
go in and click on the Outlook icon. I do have it to prompt her for a
password to download new mail, and she has a domain account which she
logs off when she is away from her PC...I've tried convincing her that
is about as secure as it's going to get, but she presses on; I looked
and found the following at Microsoft- http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/outlook/HA011138511033.aspx

Even with this, she still is upset and thinks there is a way to do
it. So I'm asking the experts; is there a way to lockdown the
executable with a password so that when she clicks on it, it prompts
her for a password first before it launches? hopefully it is a free
method.

Thanks in advance

That article is pretty comprehensive when it comes to what you can do with
Outlook and Windows' built-in security features. If I were here I'd just
lock my Windows account when I was away from my desk. That way nobody can
see or do anything when she's not there unless they know her password.

Dear Chris,

You can do this with a batch file.

Open notepad and enter this:

@echo off
runas /user:COMPANY\Janeuser "c:\program files\microsoft office
\office12\outlook.exe"

Save the file as runoutlook.bat on her desktop.

Adjust COMPANY to your domain and Janeuser for her login of course -
also office11 for Outlook 2003 (12 = OL 2007).

Remove all other outlook Icons from the desktop / start menu / and
Quick launch bar etc. As this user is insisting - well, these steps
are necessary.

When you click on the runoutlook.bat file icon, a command prompt
window will ask for this persons domain password.

Done!

Hope that helps.
