\\localhost\ a duplicate name exists on the network

Can anyone figure out why, when I try to run "\\localhost\" from my
windows 2000 server(SP4), I get an error message:

\\localhost\
A duplicate name exists on the network

This running \\127.0.0.1\ works fine.

Anyone know?

You cannot use localhost as a UNC name in this manner. This the
expected behavior:

No kiddin'! I jumped to conclusions. I had never tried it, and sure enough,
you're right.
