Local Profile to Domain Profile

Hi guys.

I have recentlly installed a Windows 2003 Server in my company. The domain
works just fine. I can authenticate all users from it. There is another issue
here.

I need to migrate the users' local profiles to the domain profiles. There
are two approaches to this, which I will describe and explain what didn't
work:

First:
- Create the user on the given domain
- Login and logout with the domain user
- Open Registry Editor (regedit)
- Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows
NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList
- Find the domain users' profile and change the ProfilePath to the local
profile

Didn't work correctlly. Some settings were imported, but the start menu
didn't function correctlly, I can't set any background images, and some
applications even lost their registry keys. This also has to be accomplished
by setting full permissions to Everyone on the profile folder, which is not
very safe. I wanted to add permissions only on the domain user, but I can't
see the domain on the "Locations" dialog, only my computer.

Second:
- Create the user on the given domain
- Login and logout with the domain user
- Login with an administrative account
- Go to "My Computer" Properties, Advanced Tab, User profiles
- Copy local profile to domain profile

Doesn't work correctlly as well. Some settings were also not imported, and
the local profile will not be updated.

I'm really desperate here. Ideas anyone?

Thanks in advance.

That is the correct way to do it. I assume you also changed "Permitted to
use" to the domain account when copying -- correct? If not, that would
definitely lead to some problems.

Also, if you have already set up roaming profiles or folder redirection for
your domain users, undo that until you are finished with the profile
transfer.
