Local network speed

David

I connect multiple computers to a router over 100Mbit
ethernet. When configuring my latest Windows XP machine,
it correctly created the ethernet adapter at 100 Mbit but
it also creates an internet gateway which is set at 10
Mbit. I am not using the software firewall as I already
have a hardware firewall. Additionally, since all the
computeres on my network are trusted, I do not desire
protection between them.

I want to be able to have 100 Mbit transfer between the
machines but at present I am stuck with 10 Mbit.

Any ideas on the configuration I should try?

Thank you,
DAvid

The internet gateway speed represents your router's uplink speed. You
should still be getting 100 between your machines.

Thank you,

I realized this after I ran performance monitor and
clocked the actual performance. I am backing up between
a Windows ME machine and this new XP box and the
performance seemed slow.

I am only getting about 20Mbit. I have disabled virus
protection on both machines and done some benchmarking. I
have a directory of 35 files that total 59 Megs. The
fastest possible transfer has been 18 seconds for 26.2
Mbit.

I have a laptop that is faster and I was going to bring
it home to try it Tommorrow.

Are there any tips for configuring XP/ME for faster
performance.

The network is simply 2 machines and a 100 Mbit router.
I have seen speeds in the 80 Mbit range before with this
router between other machines.

First, I am not a network performance expert

But, I actually think 26 Mbs is pretty good. There are lots of other
bottlenecks that could be limiting performance. Can your hard drives really
sustain that transfer rate? Are you using a mapped drive letter instead of
UNC name?
