I have a laptop with 100 Mbit ethernet and 802.11g wireless. When I
am at my desk I would like to use the faster wired connection but when
I unplug I use the wireless adapter. Can the system be set so that
when a cable is plugged in it uses that and turns off the wireless and
vice versa so that I don't have to manually do this?
TIA
I'm sorry, but I don't know of any way to have the laptop
automatically disable the wireless adapter when the wired adapter is
connected.
However, you can configure the laptop to automatically use the wired
adapter when it's connected and the wireless adapter when it isn't.
All you need to do is assign a "metric" to the network connection for
each adapter, using a lower number for the wired connection.
To assign a metric to a network connection:
1. Open the Network Connections folder.
2. Right click the desired connection.
3. Click Properties | Internet Protocol (TCP/IP).
4. Click Properties | Advanced.
5. Un-check "Automatic metric".
6. Enter a number between 1 and 9999 for the "Interface metric".
