Local LPT1 vs USB001

I have a dos program which probably defaults to print to
LPT1. When I installed in on my xp machine and tried to
print, it locked up the laptop. Everything is usb, so the
printer installed to usb001 instead of lpt1. How do I get
the dos program to print to usb001 or make it think it is
lpt1? The netuse command is for shared network printers,
so I am not sure it that will work for me or how to invoke
it.
