I just performed a re-install of XP Home including a
reformat of the hard-dirve. The following devices were
install at the time of installation:

Ide hard drive

1-zip drive (usb)

After installation the the Loas Disk connected as F:
Floppy->A
Zip->C
DVD Drive->D
CD-RW->E

You need to disconnect the ZIP drive then install WinXP.

I ran across this problem on our Dell platforms which all have ZIP 250MB IDE drives.

Disconnect the power cable to the ZIP drive then reinstall WinXP from scratch and you have
the OS on drive "C:" which is preferable.

Since it is NOT true in all cases, it can not be used as a "rule of thumb".

A ZIP 250MB USB drive would not exhibit said bahaviour and thus would not need to be
disconnected before installing the OS.

| How many times must this be said?: Unplug peripherals before installing
| anything!

You never know what will stop Win. While you may not have had a problem,
there are many others to consider (like a corrupted USB driver).

That occurs AFTER the OS installed. Not while the OS is being installed.

I re-installed with the usb drive unplugged. The local
drive is now C: and the zip attaches at the next highest
drive level when pluggin, in my case as F:.

Thanks,

That results from having the Zip drive present at the time. Start over,
format and reinstall, with the Zip drive disconnected, then install it
later
