My Windows XP-Proffessional shows the Local Disk drive as
I: not C:. Any book I scan refers to the C: drive not I:.
I purchased the PC at a small computer store. I think
because of this I am having difficulties downloading
software from Hewlett Packard website for my HP scanner
3400C. All these years we refer to a C: drive why change.

No idea why your supplier set it up like this, have you asked them?

If you or they installed a lot of S/W or OS upgrades while it was set to I:
then making the change now could stop other things working. Power Quests
"Partion Magic" comes with a utility to go through the registry and change
any hidden references to drive letters and it might be safest to use
something like that to make the change?

Otherwise I believe WinXP can just change the drive letter for you BUT
without patching the registry as follows....

First some precautions...
Backup all data first to CD (better still create a Drive Image backup)
Create a System Restore point

Now to make the change..
Right click on the My Computer tab on the desktop and select "Manage".
select Disk Management.
You should see a list of drives, Right click on your drive Iand choose
"Change Drive Letter and paths" etc
Highlight the I: drive and select change.
Choose a letter.
