Local Area Network blocked?

open internet explorer. click on tools/internet
options/connections tab. Is it set to "never dial a
connection" (or to "dial default" which no longer exists!)

If this doesn't solve it, try posting back with
ipconfig /all details (from a command prompt)

I'm slightly confused by my network. It was working fine
for years and then i used my laptop on a dialup
connection, the laptop is a client on the main network
but once i reconnected it to the network it kept trying
to dial up a connection to an account under 'MSN' this
annoyed me...a lot so i deleted the connection!
I tried to connect to the internet after that and it no
longer worked, i ran the network setup wizard several
times on both the host and client computers using a
network setup disk and not. Both computers display
the 'Local Area Connection' icon but neither computer is
recieving any of the data transmitted by the other. i
have not idea what i can do to fix the problem. Can
anyone help?!

Looks like the submask address on the host comuter is wrong. Should be 255.255.255.0 vice 255.255.0.0.

ok the submasks now match but still nothing goes thru the router! data is being sent but none being recieved either end!

looking at your original post with ipconfig details, your
host computer is recieving an apipa address (169.254.x.x)
This is an address that the computer assigns itself when
it cannot contact a dhcp server and doesn't have a static
address assigned, so this is where your problem lies.

You don't say how your network is st up.Are you using a
router to assign dhcp? if so, your host computer is not
making contact with it. Check the connections, make sure
you are using a regular inline patch cable, try changing
the cable, try changing the port it connects to on the
router.

If you are simply connecting the two machines directly,
make sure you are using a crossover cable and that ICS is
enabled on the computer that has the internet connection.

Alternatively, you could configure both pc's with static
addresses and subnet masks e.g 192.168.1.2 and
192.168.1.3 both with subnet masks of 255.255.255.0.

The other thing I noticed from ipconfig is that there was
no default gateway assigned - if you are going thru a
router, the default gateway should be your routers ip
address
