"Local Area Connection" icon

I've recently upgraded to Win XP Home. My taskbar has an
icon labeled "Local Area Connection (a network cable is
unplugged)"; like the internet connection icon (two
computers) but with a red X. My computer is not part of
a LAN or network, just a home computer. How can I delete
this icon/function? Can I, should I? Thanks.

I'm going to take a wild guess on this one.

You probably have a Networke Interface on your motherboard. If so, try
dissableing it in Device Manager, Reboot and dissable it in you BIOS.
That should make it go away. If you should ever need it, then enable it
in BIOS and Windows will find it and should install any drivers
required.

Good luck.

You can hide the icon by right-clicking the taskbar, click on Customize,
then find the local area connection in the list, click on it and under
Behavior, click on "Always hide", OK out of things and you should be good.

Right click on My Network Places, Properties, right click on Local Area
Connection and select Disable.

Nathan and Steve pointed out much simpler solution than my wild guess.
My hat is off to both.
