T.P. Clark

I bought new HD Maxtor 40 gig and win xp pro full ver.
I have used max blaster to format dr to NTLDR and partion.
When I reboot pc with the xp pro cd in dr. I get message
NTLDR is missing.
Now I have new formatted hard drive, new software that
will not auto load onto hard drive.

So much for easy upgrading!!!!

Same thing here...
Have HP with a 40GB HD that crashed. Bought new 80 GB Seagate and have new
Win XP Pro. Used Seagate software to partition drive... then when I reboot
and it tries to read XP CD and gives me the "NTLDR is missing" message.

Help!

Greetings from England,

Don't despair. You can copy the files you need from the i386 directory of
your XP CD if you can persuade your computer to open in DOS mode. This, I
suggest, you do by using an old bootable floppy disk, perhaps from WIndows
'98. When the computer fires up, take the "Start computer with CD ROM
support" option. A '98 boot drive will create a RAMdrive and probably call
it D. This will push your CD drive one down the alphabet. At the A:\
prompt, type:-

COPY E:i386\\NTLDR C:\
COPY E:\i386\NTDETECT.COM C:\

where E:\ is ther new letter temporarily assigned to your CD ROM.

Restart after removing the floppy disk and XP should now be able to find the
NTLDR it needs to start properly.

computers hardware configuration"
This must be very serious stuff cause it has been

Having used the MaxBlast software, you'll probably need to perform
a low-level format of the hard drive to restore the disk to
usefulness. Follow the instructions provided by the motherboard's
manufacturer to do this safely. Also, be sure to throw away the disk
containing MaxBlast, or, better yet, destroy it so no one else can
make the same mistake. Once you've undone MaxBlast's affects on the
hard drive:

Simply boot from the WinXP installation CD. You'll be offered the
opportunity to delete, create, and format partitions as part of the
installation process. (You may need to re-arrange the order of boot
devices in the PC's BIOS to boot from the CD.)

Your suggestion 320397 is asinine.
What I need is xp boot disks to start the win xp pro cd

No. Never, ever use Maxtor's MaxBlast software on any hard drive
that you want to use again.

Is there any indication that the process is proceeding and not just hung?
If it appears hung then start over(power down or reset button). Tell us
what happens.

It's trying to boot from the HD and not the CD. Fix the boot order in mobo
BIOS setup.

A low-level-format of an ATA HD is not possible in the field.

Nope.

Follow the instructions provided by the motherboard's
manufacturer to do this safely.

Mobo mfg's do NOT supply anything to deal with the bogus concept of
"low-level-format" of a HD.
Also, be sure to throw away the disk
containing MaxBlast,

No, MaxBlast is just fine and can be useful. MaxBalst is capable of doing
the next best thing to a low-level-format of a HD and that is writing zeroes
to the entire surface.
or, better yet, destroy it so no one else can
make the same mistake.

So far there's little evidence of any mistake having been made. It appears
that the OP simply has his HD set to boot from the HD first rather than the
CD.
Once you've undone MaxBlast's affects on the
hard drive:

Nothing likely needs to be undone unless the OP had MaxBlast load some kind
of drive overlay software(don't use drive overlay SW) and anything that
might need to be done can be done by the XP CD in the normal XP install
process.
Simply boot from the WinXP installation CD.

He will be able to do this and was not able to do this originally because
the mobo BIOS setup isn't set to boot from CD first and should be changed.

That is just ridiculous. MaxBlast works just fine. It is the program of
choice to test and clear any Maxtor ATA HD. A failing MaxBlast diagnostic
run is usually required before RAMing a failing Maxtor drive.

Keep MaxBlast around.

Greetings --

Not in my experience. I've never seen a more sure-fire way to
ruin a hard drive than to use MaxBlast on it.
