Loading Windows XP OEM to new computer

Brian Bridwell

I have an OEM version of Windows XP Home. The computer it
came on died and I am building a new computer. Can I
install the OEM version onto the new computer? I have
heard that it can only be installed on the original
computer. I have also heard that you can contact
Microsoft for a fix to aloow loading onto up to 5
different computers. Any help would be greatly
appreciated!
Thanks!

One of the restrictions of an OEM version of Windows XP is that its
license is perpetually tied to the first computer it is installed on. Therefore,
it cannot be installed and activated on another computer. Only "retail versions"
of Windows XP may be transferred to another computer.

Also, there is no such thing as a "fix" that allows one license to be installed
on more than one computer. You must purchase a new license for each
installation of Windows XP on a different computer.

If you wish to have the flexibility of transferring Windows XP to another
computer in the future, purchase a "retail version".

Greetings --

OEM versions are _permanently_ bound to the first PC on which they
are installed. An OEM license, once installed, is not legally
transferable to another computer under any circumstances.
