bought a second copy of XP Home and was going to install
it on my laptop to see if it would work ok.
ran setup and put in product code and it said there was
another OS on the system. (Logically you would think it
would offer to delete it but, NO)
So being that it wanted to do a clean install, and my
laptop can't boot from CD Rom, got the six disc set of
Windows setup and booted from that, then formatted the
drive and went to install XP and got "Values in the .SIF
file used by setup is corrupted or missing"

I am assuming that is the file with the product code in,
so now it won't load.

Any work arounds ????

Please anser by email as I can't seem to ever find my
post in newsgroups.

Thanks

Are you using a set of Windows XP setup floppy disks? If you are,
you're using the wrong set:

Obtaining Windows XP Setup Boot Disks
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;310994

There are two different versions of setup disks for Windows XP.
If you have a Windows XP CD without Service Pack 1, you need to use
the first set listed. If you have a Windows XP CD that includes SP1,
then use the ones listed at the bottom of the page.

The Windows XP CD is bootable and contains all the tools necessary
to partition and format your drive. Follow this procedure and allow
Windows XP to partition and format your drive:

1. Open your BIOS and set your CD Drive as the first bootable device.

---> Accessing Motherboard BIOS
---> http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/bios_manufacturer.htm

2. Insert your Windows XP CD in the CD Drive and reboot your computer.
3. You'll see a message to boot to the CD....follow the instructions.
4. The setup menu will appear and you should elect to delete the existing
Windows partitions, then create a new partition, then format the primary
partition (preferably NTFS) and proceed to install Windows XP.

5. Clean Install Windows XP

6. After installing Windows XP, be sure and visit the support website
of the manufacturer of the computer to download and install any
available Windows XP compatible drivers, such as video adapter
and audio drivers.

7. It would be best to physically disconnect all your peripheral hardware
devices, except for you mouse and keyboard, before installing XP.
After XP is installed, visit the support website of the manufacturer
of each hardware device to obtain the latest drivers or software
designed to work with Windows XP.
