when switching on everything runs ok until we reach the screen shortcut icons
appearing on the screen and then we seem to go into a standby situation.
eventually after a few minutes they usually appear any ideas what could be
causing this delay

How many programs are starting up with Windows and showing in the
Notification Area (the right end of the taskbar with the clock)?
You don't really need most of them.

My desktop icons (about 80 shortcuts) are all displayed long before the
icons (AV, firewall and Norton Ghost) are all finished loading and displayed
in the right hand end of the taskbar. And no it's not Norton but Zone Alarm
that takes the longest to load.

I've noticed that on several machines; no idea why but I've been told ZA
is monitoring things and thus does several pauses waiting for things to
happen and inspects several things. That's not a lot of info, but ZA
seems to load that way on any machine I encounter.
On my own machine I removed it from the boot process and gave it a
delayed start of 1 1/2 minutes after the boot. It did help boot time a
little, but nothing humongous. So I Put it back where it wanted to be
so it'd at least be watching things during the boot. I kind of wonder
if it isn't arguing with things like AV and other scanners but too lazy
to track it down any further; "someday" though<g>.
