loading audio

I would like to be able to have music start playing when I have a visitor
come to my site. With what I have now, a 100k file still takes awhile
before it starts playing. Is there a way to have it play as it is still
downing teh audio?
Also, I would like to have it play until they leave my site completly,
meaning that everytime they view a new page on my site, the audio doesn't
start over.

Thanks in advance

You could put it into a streaming media format such as Windows Media format,
or RealAudio. Both companies produce free encoders to use to create their
streaming media files. If you're using the bgsound property of the page, I'm
not sure if a streaming media file will work though. You could embed a media
payer in the page, minus the controls so it would appear hidden.

For the second thing, don't even bother. One, most people will get annoyed
at background sounds that play their whole visit that they can't turn off.
Two, it requires you to place your site into frames with one frame
containing the page that has the audio file playing, and the other page that
actually contains the site. Frames cause too many problems to mention really
and pretty much went by the wayside years ago.

An alternative to frames is a small pop-up window opened by the on-load
event or a link on the home page (but ONLY on the home page).
Pop-up blockers will prevent the music playing for most people :) and
for those who allow it, it is easy to close the window when the music
gets annoying.
