Hi, to speed up startup time of a program (I'm thinking of autocad and some
othe heavy programs), I would like to know it is possible to load it
permanently in the ram.

Thanks

Hi Matt

RAM loses all of its settings every time the power is turned off. So your
idea is not possible unless you leave your pc on all the time or buy
specialist hardware.

What you could do to improve performance is have a specific profile for
running these big apps with out other processes slowing them down.

At the end of the day the only real options you have 1) upgrade or 2) wait
for the app to load.

Cheers

Closest thing I can think of is to just leave it running all the time,
minimized when you don't need it. And perhaps use hibernate rather than
shutting down.

You can do this by creating a RAM disk. There are several pprprietary
packages.
It does work but you need a very reliable system not subject to frequnet
reboots as each time you reboot the RAM disk has to recreate itself.

Some software/firmware can keep the RAM powered all the
time, even when the computer is off for most functions. But
you might find that a new, faster hard drive and more RAM
would work as well.

I did have an old Toshiba laptop over ten years ago (a T1000
DOS only) that could be set in the BIOS to keep some of the
RAM alive. I installed the WORKS program in that RAM-disk
and it worked very well considering the limitations of the
hardware, no hard drive, total memory 1.4 MB plus a 720 KB
floppy).

Just Google for "ram disk" [9,000,000 hits] and "ramdisk"
[248,000 hits]

Thinking outside the square, why not just put these programs in your
StartUp group. Takes a while for your WinXP boot-up to go, but thence
you'll have shorter wait times when invoking such applications.

I know this doesn't answer your wish for a 'RAM-based' solution.
This does use the Windows VM (Virtual Memory).
