Some software/firmware can keep the RAM powered all the
time, even when the computer is off for most functions. But
you might find that a new, faster hard drive and more RAM
would work as well.
I did have an old Toshiba laptop over ten years ago (a T1000
DOS only) that could be set in the BIOS to keep some of the
RAM alive. I installed the WORKS program in that RAM-disk
and it worked very well considering the limitations of the
hardware, no hard drive, total memory 1.4 MB plus a 720 KB
floppy).
Just Google for "ram disk" [9,000,000 hits] and "ramdisk"
[248,000 hits]
