LKGC question

I did have to try LKGC that's how I know it's the same as it was over a year
ago when I had to use it. I have always used ATI graphics and when I use
LKGC it says have it installed or it cannot fine the needed files/drivers.
No matter what version the drivers were, the recognizing of the ATI graphics
still should have been there.

I do have my drives backup but I need to do it more frequently. My pc does
run well just every once in a while I download something that I probably
shouldn't and it seems okay until I reboot, then that's when I find out
something changed.

The ERUNT backups up the registry everytime I reboot and since I leave my pc
on just put it to sleep when not using, I try and reboot at least once a
day.

LKGC is last known good configuration. The reason I had to use it was when I
did reboot I got the screen that said something changed....etc select how to
start computer, I tried safe boot and it ran through the drivers but didn't
come up, to I choose LKGC.

Yeah I'm going to keep up on my drive backups, especially the c drive.

(A year ago is a long time!)

So why not reinstall the ATI graphic card drivers?

Then just make sure you regularly image your drive.

What sort of things do you download that you probably shouldn't?

The ERUNT default is 30 days .

Normally ERUNT creates a new backup each new day after rebooting (for 5
days) under autobackup, not each time you reboot. And if that's the case,
you'd only have 5 days worth of backups, unless you had saved some manually
(which I do, on occasion). So if this happened more than 5 days ago, that
option is moot.

Well, there is always System Restore as another possible fallback, but even
that one is a bit limited.

OK, thanks for the clarification.

The ERUNT application is very versatile in it's command-line options (you
can tell it to do just about anything!).

I have it set to backup the registry (including current user - important to
me) once a day, overwriting after 7 days.

(the command-line for that is; "AUTOBACK.EXE %SystemRoot%\ERDNT\#Date#
sysreg curuser /days:7 /noprogresswindow" )

But, you could equally have it do a backup on every successful boot!

You don't have to rely on ERUNT's default behaviours - just consult the
"readme.txt" file within your ERUNT directory, for full command-line
options and syntax.

If you have any difficulties, just post what it is you want ERUNT to do
(backup just the registry only or with user settings included, how often to
make the backup and where to place the backup ) and I will compose for
you, the appropriate command-line to do it. So you can replace the one you
have now. This is one of the ways a newsgroup like this one can be of
some help.

I do reinstall the ATI but it gets to be a pain especially when I also have
to reinstall about a half dozen programs too.

Debbie

Okay Tim you got me curious here. If my LKGC isn't backing up successful
boot then setting the ERUNT to do it won't work either, right? How and
where do you set the commands? I guess mine is on default AUTOBACK
DestinationFolder (sysreg) (curuser) (otherusers) (/noconfirmeddelete)
(/noprogresswindow) (/days:n) (/alwayscreate)

That is precisely the reason you should image your drive once you
reinstall your drivers, programs, updates, etc. This way, you would
*never* have to reinstall them again! No more pain. :-)

If you have a copy of ERUNT on your system, then you should read, very
carefully, through it's help documentation.

I have to say, it taught me allot about the NT registry, where it's files
reside and the names of their files, and the possible ways of restoring
them.

But, as I think this may be what you meant in your last reply, it won't
work alone to restore the registry, if Windows won't start at all!

But if ERUNT has made regular back-ups, you need to be able to use the
Windows Recovery Console, with which you can then easily restore the copies
ERUNT has made, back to their original locations.

As a matter of fact, my XP PC told me it could not load my profile, and so
re-set to default ALL OF MY USER SETTINGS!! But as I had included the
"curuser" switch with ERUNT - I was able to locate a backup of my
"ntuser.dat" file and copy it to my profile folder. All was then back as
it was - phew!
