Little Pop Up Boxes over Menu Options in Works, Word and Other App

Every time I position the cursor over an option in a menu, there is a little
box that pops up to belabors the obvious. How do I make it disappear and
never come back? These little boxes cover up things I want to see. This is
a problem in Works, Word, and other applications.
