Lite Installer failure

I'm not sure if I'm posting this in the right group, so if I'm not, please
bear with me or direct me to the right spot.

I have a Windows XP Standard platform and several months ago had a
devastating virus (unknown source and apparently unknown to my fully updated
Trend Micro) that fully crashed the system to the dreaded "blue screen of
death". I had to reformat and use the emergency recovery disk to reload
factory software, and then reloaded all other software by hand. Since the
crash, the Windows Lite Installer is not functioning, so that if I purchase a
program at a store and go to register it on-line, any updates the company
might send will not load. I get the error message, "Windows Lite Installer
has failed and must shut down. Would you like to notify Microsoft Support
about this problem?" I've said Yes each time, but I've never gotten a
response or a link for a patch. Of course, this makes purchasing software
difficult!

The disk that came with the Sony doesn't have a repair feature for Windows
XP. Has this ever happened to anyone before and how do I fix it? Thanks!

Windows Lite Installer? Never heard of it? Where did you get it?

I'm not sure what a "Windows Lite Installer" is? Is it a program
that Sony provided in order for you to obtain updates to the software
that they pre-installed on your machine? Unless you're referring to
the Windows Installer?

Can you install any software to your computer? If you're not having
difficulty installing software, then the Windows Installer is working
OK.

Nor am I familiar with the name. It's one of the reasons I'm asking. But
that's the message that pops up. I can indeed install software, but any
update that has an .msi extension won't load. Any thoughts?

Then you've got some third-party software on your hard drive. If you
didn't install it, then who did? There is no "Windows Lite Installer"
as part of Windows. Go into Safe Mode and look for it in Add/Remove
Programs and try to uninstall it. Do all the normal troubleshooting;
i.e., scan with current av and spyware remove tools. Start computer
with a clean boot. Post back if you need help in doing any of those
steps.
