Windows 98:

anti virus - AntiVir
browser - Firefox
firewall - none
spyware monitor - none (I don't install much software at all, and unsafe
web sites are accessed using Lynx)
email - 'pine' on a shell account or Gmail

Windows 2000 Pro:

(no particular order)

1) Outpost Firewall, freeware version, running all the time

2) Hosts file; this one:

http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm

3)Turn off Server, DNS Client services

4) Turn off preview pane in Outlook express

5) Install most critical updates

6) Only visit trusted web sites

7) Delete all cookies after every browsing session

8) Infrequent scan of entire hard disk with F-Prot for DOS

Windows 2000 Pro:

The most important thing I can think of, use a low privilege user account
and NOT the administrator account for daily use.

Only log in as admin when you need to install software that requires such
privileges.

turn off all unneeded services according to blackviper.com

I followed BlackViper's recommendations to turn various services off
but needed to activate some of them again to access the Net.

Is Ad-aware free once again?

I would add an IP lookup tool like Sam Spade (Web or download) to
your list.

Anonymous Usenet posting server - like your and my Individual.net.

XP: make visible scrap objects (.shs) by reg hack at
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\ShellScrap.

XP: file encryption? disable file and print sharing if not needed?
