Linksys Wireless WAP54G Won't Connect to BEFSR11

I recently got a new cable modem from Roadrunner. For whatever reason,
my router was not compatible with it and I had to go back to using an
old router a Linksys BEFSR11. It works fine with a wired connection
but when I try to hook up my Linksys WAP54G Access Point so I can
connect up my wireless notebook, I cannot connect to the internet and
the wireless card is not getting an IP, just an autoconfiguration IP.
I am running Windows XP PRO. I currently have the Access Point
connected to my 4 -port Hub which then connects to the router. I am
not sure how to make this access point work with the router, do I need
to set up the access point up with the default static IP, and if so how
do I configure the router to see this?
Any help would be appreciated, been pulling my hair out for 2 weeks on
this problem.

Well, the default IP for a BEFSR11 is 192.168.1.1, and the default for a
WAP54G is 192.168.1.245; so out of the box they would be compatible.
However, since neither device is new, these settings may have been changed.
You need to determine what these settings are and you may need to
reconfigure them. Product guides are available at linksys.com.

I checked and those are the correct settings, however I am trying to
figure out how to connect the wireless laptop to the internet through
the Access Point. It seems that it would need to contact the router to
get an ip address through DHCP to do this, but the access point needs
to somehow be the go between. Any ideas?

Hi chiefhero

Have you tried resetting the your wap54g? There's a reset button at the back
of the AP, just hold it down for 10 sec. then do a power cycle on the AP.

If Resetting isn't an option for you, you can check the AP's configuration
if Wireless security is enabled. If it is you can try to resynch or reenter
your password on your wireless PC. Or you can try disabling the Wireless
Security.

Another Step you can do is you can try to change the SSID or the wireless
name of the WAP54G so that the connection on your wireless PC can see a new
connection and synchronize with it.

By the way, have you also tried checking if you can get an IP or a
connection when a PC is wired to your 4 port hub?

Hope this helps!

I reset the Access Point and did a power cycle on it and the router.
Then I disabled wireless security and now it is working. I think for
whatever reason the security settings were not the same on the PC as
the access point. I set them up correctly before, but maybe they got
changed somehow. If I get bored one day I may try to reenable
security, but for now I am just glad it works at all!
Thanks for your help kuldud!

This points to a mismatch between the encryption codes. You will recover
from your boredom when someone else starts using your connection to the
internet. Right now, you are wide open to intruders.

Thanks for getting me off my duff to enable security. I got it to
work, turns out i had to set windows to use WPA-PSK instead of WPA and
then security worked. Would anyone reccomend other security measures
like changing the default password on my access point, or is that
overkill for a home network?
Thoughts?

Not really, no. Turning off the SSID broadcast will only slow down the most
inexperienced folks trying to sniff into your network.

Is WPA security the best?

If it's the highest level of security all devices support, yes.
