Linksys wireless router with XP Pro in Centrino - Connection Keep Dropping

Hi fellows,

I just purchased a new Centrino with XP Pro running.
Before, I have a XP Home PC (usb Linksys wireless
adapter), a XP Pro PC (usb Linksys wireless adapter) and
a Win200 laptop (Linksys pc card) running at home and
connection to a Linksys wireless router (w11s4) all fine.

The problems are:
1) The new Centrino with XP Pro can connect to the
wireless network but keep dropping the connection by
itself. I need to reset the router and reset the wireless
connection from XP Pro for reconnecting.

2) The new Centrino with XP Pro keep popups a window to
ask me if I want to connect to my next door's wireless
networks. In fact I do not want to and do want to be asked.

How to resolve them?????

Will the first problem be resolved if I get a MS wireless
router?

Any help please.

Thanks

Hi,

Is the centrino wireless working in automatic mode/power save mode, wheer
the signal strength will be reduice at idle times and may result in apprent
disconnects/connects? I had this issue when I first used mine. Use
configure>advanced under nic properties to set the transmit power.

Not experienced the "Roaming" scenario you describe, but have you got
windows managing the wireless connection or some other software?
You can check under the wreless nic propoerties>wireless network tab (look
at the first check-box).
Are you operating in adhoc mode rather than infrastructure mode?

Rgds,
Graham.

Hi Graham, first thanks for your information.

The signal strength was high (indicated as max in the
dialog) and I was 1 foot next to the wireless router. And
it is not in power save mode.

I have tried both let window manage your wireless
connection checked and not checked, and both the same
(dropping and need to be reset).

My wireless network is in infrastructure mode.

I have done some research in the web and found that it is
a common xp pro problem with Linksys wireless router. Some
described as Wireless Zero Services problem. But No one
has a real fix for this.

Thanks

Taddy,
I too had intermittent disconnects'/re-connects on my Netgear ADSL router,
until I eventually found a channel with consistent signal strength and
quality.
Try offsetting your current channel by 5 or so either direction and see if
that improves it. I started off on Channel 3 - ended up on 10!
I have found the Centrino wireless to be more resilient to wireless
vagueries than Netgear's own Wireless clients.

If it is a known problem with Linksys, they may be producing a firmware
update? May be worth giving their tech support a call/e-mail.

Just a thought.

Regards,
Graham
