linksys router

I am trying to connect remotely to the work place. I have installed a
Linksys BESFR41v4 4-port wired router (replacing a Netgear router).
Everything about the router
seems to work as designed except I can not connect remotely. I AM able to
ping the WAN IP without problem. At first I was getting a 'protocol error'
(don't remember the exact message), but now I just get an error that says it
can't connect. I also can not get there via Internet Explorer.

I have port forwarding enabled, port 3389 (Remote Desktop) pointing to one
IP on the LAN. After talking to Linksys yesterday they had me enable DMZ
for this one IP.

I have the same router at home and connecting via Remote Desktop or WIN-VNC
is not a problem.

There has to be some setting I am missing that is not allowing the
connection. Forget about the Remote Desktop stuff, I can't even get to the
logon screen to put in the name and password. The password has been
changed, Remote management enabled at port 8080 (default). Linksys tells
me there is nothing else and it should work, but then they conflict whats in
the manual on some things. I have a v4 router (according to the stats
page), but can not find to download the manual for this router as v3 is the
last one listed on their web site. I am reviewing the manual that came on
the CD but have not found anything yet..

One thing I did notice is that the MTU is disabled (by default). Does this
need to be enabled in order to connect remotely?

For whatever reason they (Linksys) always ask how many computers are
connected behind the router. There are 12. Once they get the answer they
never say why they asked. If I have to call them again I will ask if there
is a problem with the number s PC's connected.

Appreciate any help in getting this working.

Thanks.

The MTU configurable would be enabled and configured if the router is connected to a DSL line. Is
that the case? If you are, I believe the value should be set for 1492. Someone should correct me if
I am wrong about that...

Have you verified port forwarding at the remote router is configured correctly for TCP Port 3389 and
to the static LAN IP of the PC you want to connect to? You are calling the correct public IP for the
router?

Otherwise you might verify the Linksys router has the latest firmware installed and/or try a new RDP
client...

Personally I would not enable DMZ unless you have a software firewall running on the PC. If you do
then make sure that is configured to allow RDP access...

We are connected via broadband (cox.net), not DSL.

Yes, checked and double checked. port 3389 is forwarded to one PC on the
LAN. I do have BOTH protociols enabled, should Ijust have the TCP enabled?
I am calling the correct public IP. When I first started this I could NOT
ping the public IP, but after disabling the 'block anonomuys internet
request" I am able to ping the public IP, which I know if a good start.

According teo Linksys, the latest firmware IS installed, although I have not
checked for a newer version but I will..

I didn't want to do this, as I know it's not good, but was willing to try
it. I have since disabled it..

Thanks. I will check the above references for any help.

All of this remote desktop stuff aside, I can not get to teh log on screen
for the router from remote. I am pretty sure once I am able
to do this, RD will work as designed...

I'm not sure if this is THE solution to your problem or even if it's A
solution, but have you tried Enabling UPnP on that router? I have the same
router. Works great, but for some things to work right (such as Video
Conferencing with MSN Messenger) you have to enable UPnP on the
Administration tab. Don't know if that may affect the ability to access it
remotely or not, but it's at least worth a try.

Thanks. I will give that a try. I know comparing to mine, UPnP is enabled.

UPnP appeared to be the answer. Enabled it and viola it worked.

Too bad Linksys couldn't help me..

THANKS!
