Linksys firmware won't update

Have a Linksys BEFSR41 4 port wired router. Trying to update the firmware, I get the error
"Failed to update to flash ROM. Please retry." Liksys support says it's an XP error. Here's what I tried so far

Disabled internet & virus protection
Power down router,cable modem & system to reset several times
Ping the router - came back OK

Kinda stuck, thanks in advance

I can't help thinking that this has nothing to do with XP and that
Linksys just trying to get you off the phone. Their own instructions at
http://www.linksys.com/support/top10faqs/befsr41/How to upgrade the firmware on a BEFSR41.asp
(which I hope you followed) have at bottom the quote: If you are still
having troubles, contact Linksys Technical Support.

All I can think of is that since you are communicating with the box via
the network, then maybe it's a firewall on XP getting in the way?
