When I want to e-mail a link to a friend, it appears a new Windows mail
message only. I have not yet been able to use WM because it won't deal with
hotmail or gmail.
(Suggestions on what to do about that problem have not been useful to me.)
Simply, I want send the link to new Hotmail or Gmail message, bypassing WM
altogether.

Copy the link, compose a new message, paste the link in the new message.
Send.

As Steve suggested, you can simply copy the link and paste it into your
favorite mail screen.

However, if you want MailTo links to be handled automatically by clicking,
you can easily set up a Gmail account in Windows Mail by
following their detailed instructions:
