Every time I try to open a link, I get an error message from Microsoft
Internet Explorer that it could not perform this operation because the
default mail client was not installed properly. I tried installing Oulook on
my PC in order to xfer all my emails from old PC, I never could get it to
work.
I uninstalled the Office 2007 trial because every time I clicked on a link
in my emails, it would launch Office and ask for the product key which I did
not purchase.

Any ideas?

First, you will need to make up your mind as to which email
program you want to be your default. Outlook versions older
than Outlook 2003 do not work well in Vista. Assuming that
you want to use Windows Mail, do the following:

Open the Default Programs applet, which you can access either from
the Start menu or via the Control Panel, then click the first item:
"Set your default programs."
After a few seconds, a list of programs comes up. Click on Windows
Mail. If it doesn't respond with "This program has all its defaults"
then fix it by clicking on the option indicated by the first green arrow.
Repeat the above but click on Internet Explorer this time.

If you have questions concerning Office, those are best asked
in an Office newsgroup.

It does not help for me (Vista x64).
Windows Mail and MSIE have set "This program has all its defaults"
but still get error when click on mailto: link in any browser.
Also there is no mailto: protocol on extensions and protocols list.
How to add protocol in windows Vista 64-bit?

If the MailTo protocol is missing, try this:

Open the Default Programs applet.
Click "Set program access and computer defaults."
Click Custom, and select Windows Mail.
Click OK.
