Links in SmartArt don't work with Viewer

We have an interesting problem that has been tested everywhich way from
Sunday. When a PowerPoint slide is made with a SmartArt graphic and a
hyperlink to another slide is added to the SmartArt text, the hyperlink
doesn't work in PPT Viewer. The link does work with full PowerPoint, however.

We discovered this originally when a student came in with a presentation and
all the links worked except forthe SmartArt. I built a "fresh" presentation,
with 4 slides, added SmartArt to #1 and links to the other 3 slides. I
packed for CD, etc., took along the linked files and all that doo-dah.

The presentation worked in PowerPoint, but not in Viewer. By the way, I
have the latest version of the Viewer and Office SP1 installed.

Any help will be appreciated.

Thanks,

Roger

hyperlinks in SmartArts don't work in the viewer - that's a fact. You can
ungroup the SmartArt in Powerpoint to make the links work for the viewer:

- Select the shapes inside the SmartArts by clicking on one shape and then
pressing Ctrl+A
- Copy them
- insert a new slide with title only
- Paste the shapes into this slide
- click on "Home / Drawings / Arrange / Ungroup"

Hello,

Thanks for your help. The ungrouping will certainly do the job. None of us
here knew that the View didn't follow SmartArt links.

Who would have thought....?

Thanks!

Wow, my first article in your FAQ!

My site on this issue is not very helpful for the English newsgroup here,
but maybe some Germans read here as well. The German explanation can be
found on http://www.2007.ppt-faq.de/html/3text/smartart/smgruppe.htm

I'll have to make a point of stealing from you more often. ;-)

but please don't translate with BableFish! Otherwise you will get some very
funny tipps.

It's not strange at all that you haven't any tipp from me in your FAQ up to
now. My English was much too bad to write much. But "fortune favours the
brave" - I'm practising and the result seems to by satisfying :)

That is INCRIDIBLE!!!!!
Absolutely for SURE, Microsoft has URGENT to solve this!!!

Links in SmartArts MUST work in Viewer, OF COURSE.

There is another problem with LINKS in SMARTARTS.

If I insert a smartart, for example one with five circles, and I want insert
LINKS in each of the circles, THAT IS NOT POSSIBLE.

The only way to insert links in smartarts is in the TEXT inside the circle
(or any shape of the smartart), but that is not what I want. If only the text
has the link, when an user clicks in a place inside the circle, but not on
the text, THE LINK WILL NOT WORK.

That is not the right, of course. It is necessary that ALL THE SHAPE (in the
case all the circle) get the link, like any button in the web. The users will
not click EXACTLY in the text, he will click in the SHAPE.

Put a shape (a circle might be best) on top of each circle in the SmartArt
diagram. Add your link to that. Make the shape 99% transparent fill. Give it
no line.

If you make it with no line/no fill or make the fill color 100% transparent,
the links won't work in at least some versions of PPT and/or the PPT Viewer.
Stick with 99% transparent fill to be safe.

thanks Echo!
But that is too much work and time if you are working with dozens of
smartarts.

Microsoft needs URGENT to solve these problems with LINKS IN SMARTARTS.
Makes NO SENSE that beautifull shapes can not be used like links, it is
against the whole ideia of the smartarts.

I would also like to see this fixed, but I wouldn't hold my breath.

I know MS is aware of the issue, because I've reported it.
