Linking to a picture

James

I'm trying to create a link to a picture from a PowerPoint
slide. The only formats that work are BMP and JPEG, which
are about the only two I don't want to use.

I'd rather use PNG format pictures. I've tried changing
file associations between a couple of programs (Photoshop,
Fireworks) but nothing seems to work. Any ideas?

Thanks

How are you trying to link to the image? The standard way is to use Insert
Picture > Picture from File. It sounds like you are using a different
method or a very old version of PowerPoint?

Neither method works. I'm using PowerPoint 2002.

Insert, Picture from File, Insert Link to File inserts a
picture but doesn't link it. Insert, Object, Create From
File, Link = Yes generates an error message.

As I say, the problem is only with non-GIF and JPEG file
formats.

It should. I'll wager that it does, but it may not be doing it in a way you
expect.

For example, don't assume that picture links will appear on the Edit, Links
list. They won't.
Or that you'll be able to doubleclick the picture to edit it. You won't.

Picture links are entirely different from OLE links. That may be A Good
Thing or it may be A Bad Thing. Depends on what you're after. Fill us in
on that and we'll go from there.

Thanks Steve, you're right. The image is linked but the
link is transparent at all to the user and it doesn't seem
that you can control it as you can in Word. A Bad Thing in
my opinion.

I just came across this writing some exercises, so it's
not a big problem for me, but I found this link is helpful
if anyone is interested in following up:
