Linking Excel

I am slowly learning all the intricacies of BCM. It could be a great program.
The question is can I "Link" to excel. I know I can import. However linking
would be awesome.

You can link to Excel files, by adding them to an item's history.

What do you mean By an "Item" would that be the account or the whole database?
are there any instructions for that process?
