Linking Excel spreadsheet in Access

Hi,

I am having trouble when linking a excel spreadsheet into
a Access database. My spreadsheet contains a field
consisting of Alpha fields or numeric fields, sorted
alphabetically ie,

100100
104098
AHEBTOC
WEGAINTC

The link wizard shows that link was successful but whn
viewing the table all numerics are correct but any Alpha
fields are shown as #Num!

I have tried formatting excel field to "text" to no avail,
and am now lost.
