Link problems and publish problems!

I have FP 2003 and am maintaining a website www.esill.net. I recently added
the page

http://www.esill.net/Winter.htm



My problem is that the links do not work in Firefox (and a friend says that
it does not work on her Mac)-Home and the Catalogue Booklet. It appears to
work fine in Internet Explorer.



I thought maybe if I published it to my pc and then published it back it
might fix the problem. You cannot publish to itself can you?



Problem is that I have set up the Windows XP Pro with the server and I used
to be able to publish to it. But I cannot publish to http://localhost/esill
because I now receive a userid and password box. I can browse to the
website via c:\\Inetpub\wwwroot\esill but cannot use that to publish to. I
never can figure out what caused the userid/password box to start popping up
since I never set anything. I have had problems with this in the past and
have reformatted and installed the OS again with IIS but I am frustrated by
having to do this. I am the sole user of the pc so no one else has done
anything. I decided to forget this and try to publish to My Documents
location but then I receive a script error.



Is there a simple way to get the links to work?

The non-functioning links are in VML text-boxes.
In browsers other than Internet Explorer VML text-boxes are rendered as
images, any links in the text boxes will look like links, but are just
pictures.

Do not use text boxes (or any other VML such as WordArt, ShapeArt or
other objects created from the Drawing toolbar) in any web site unless
100% of the browsers used to view it are Internet Explorer running on
Windows PCs.

Thank you Ronx. I do not know how I managed to place it in VML text-boxes.
Guess I will have to figure out how I did that so I do not do it again.

I copied some information from MS Publisher and Word that others sent me
into the page. It must be something from that causing the VML problems?

Hi Susan,

If you are copying and pasting anything from Word or Publisher it is best if
you first paste it into Notepad..and then copy and paste from Notepad into
FrontPage. That will remove all of the extraneous .mso code that isn't good
for web pages.

Basically though that is just for text...for images you should do those
separately into your FrontPage site. (stick to .gif, or .jpg mostly for
formats)

The problem with copying it into Notepad is that you lose all the
formatting. I have that problem frequently where someone sends me
information in MS-Word, or MS-Publisher. It is sometimes easier just to look
at the printed piece of paper and type it in! Guess I could scan it and
place it as a jpg but then comes changes and corrections! Please forgive me
for complaining--just wish things were compatible.

Hi Susan,

I understand the ease that exists between copying and pasting from
Word/Publisher into FrontPage. However the formatting that you get into a
Web Page from those applications was never designed for that. If all of your
site viewers only used Internet Explorer..you might be able to get away with
doing the straight copy and paste (although there still would be a ton of
extra code that really isn't needed) It might seem like extra work to format
what you have with FrontPage again..but your end results will be much
better.

Thanks! You are right of course! I have been lazy lately and spending more
time assisting in the hijackthis forums! I need to spend more time
converting and formatting the web stuff.

When dealing with Word (doesn't work with Publisher) open a blank page
in FrontPage, then with Windows Explorer, drag the entire Word Document
onto the blank page - do NOT open the word document, just drag it with
explorer. This retains most of the formatting, and removes a lot of
extra code. You can then cut and paste the bits you need from that page
in FrontPage.
If there are images in the Word document, then there may be some problem
code to sort out.
