Link failures in IE 6, including mail link problem

Over the past several weeks I have been having problems
with click through links not working.

I am running Windows 2000 Professional, and I have all the
critical updates installed.

As near as I can figure it out, it seems that links that
involve java script just will not work.

Intermitently, I am also having problems with straight
link throughs not working. (Don't you love gremlins.) In
those cases, I am able to right click to copy the link and
place it in the address bar to get to the site. This will
sometimes even exhibit itself with different links on the
same page -- it will work with some and not with others.

I have reset my advance properties for the Explorer to
default to see if that was the problem. No joy.

I was considering uninstalling IE6, but the page for the
download says that you cannot do a clean install of IE6 in
W2000.

I am having a related problem with my Outlook Express.
When I hit a click through link in IE6 to email someone,
it tries to hook up to Outlook, which is not configured
for email, so it gives me an error message. I have
checked with the tools in IE6, and I am really puzzled
here. When I go to Tools and click on the Programs tab,
MS Office Outlook is the only email program that is
available. Outlook Express is not an option. (Outlook
Express is set up as my default email server.)

For IE:
try this:
Start/Run/Type this command:
REGSVR32 URLMON.DLL
Ok/Reboot.
Then go to: IE/Tools/Internet Options/Programs/Reset Web Settings.

Windows Explorer/Tools/Folder Options/File Types. Scroll down to
URL:HyperText Transfer Protocol/Advanced/Edit. Under Application used to
perform action it should read:
"C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe" -nohome

For OE:
Go to Start>Run and type the following:

"C:\PROGRAM FILES\OUTLOOK EXPRESS\MSIMN.EXE" /reg

(Check the path to msimn.exe to make sure that is correct)

Be certain to include the quotations marks and the space between the ending
quotation mark and the slash. Suggest that if the path is correct, you just
copy/paste the line above into the Start>Run line.

Then open Internet Explorer and go to Tools>Internet Options>Programs and
set OE as the default mail (and news) program.

For OE:
From http://www.fjsmjs.com/OE/defaultl.htm

Go to Start | Run and type this command, with the double quotes and spaces:

"C:\Program Files\Outlook Express\msimn.exe" /reg

and then make sure that OE is selected as the default mail program in both
IE and OE.

1. You might want to refresh your scripting engine:

Sometimes there's a corrupt file in the cache and one must go to Tools |
Internet Options and click Delete Files.

2a. Start>Run>Regsvr32 vbscript.dll

2b. Start>Run>Regsvr32 jscript.dll

I have good news and bad news.

The good news is that your proposed solution for Outlook
Express worked. The bad news is that the solution for the
Internet Explorer did not.

I followed your suggested solution through twice. In both
cases, I was told that the regsvr32 urlmon.dll was
successful. When I went to check the Application to
perform the action, I had problems.

When I dug down to the URL:Hypertext Transfer Protocol, I
found the following information:

Application used: "C:\Program Files\Internet
Explorer\iexplore.exe" -nohome %1
Box for Use DDE is checked
DDE Message: "%1",,-1,0,,,,

For an experiment, I removed the " %1" from behind the "-
nohome" but that did not work. The same string
reappeared. Even if I rebooted after trying to edit that
string.

Perhaps something is corrupted?

Suggestions on how to approach or fix this problem?
