Link Bars - no FP extensions!

I have FP 2003 and Windows XP pro with IIS installed. I
am maintaining a simple non-profit site which is on a
server with no FP extensions. On my computer on my site I
have left shared borders and I used the custom links and
used a theme link bar.

I was able to publish the website to a folder on my
computer. I checked "continue" when I received the window
that some items may not work (don't remember exact
wording). The link bars worked! I then ftp'd the folder
website to remote website without FP extensions and
checked "Ignore and Continue". I was totally surprised
that the link bars worked. I know if link bars are based
on the Navigation system, it will not work, however I
used custom links.

Evidently if you use custom links and chose a bar based
on theme, you do not need FP extensions.

Themes, Link Bars Based On Navigation View, and Shared
Borders are all design-time components. That is, once you
save the pages locally, they're complete. You don't need
the FrontPage Server Externsions on the Web server to
make these features display correctly.

The mistake most people make is to publish using an
external FTP program, and not transfer all the files that
FrontPage created. The _derived, _overlay, and _private
folders are typical omissions.

So you are saying that I could also base the Link Bars on
the Navigation View if I have that set up, save it, and
then transfer (ftp) all the folders and everything would
work? That is wonderful to know!

Note: There are some features of the Link bars and shared border that do require the FP2002
extensions on the remote server.

I see where this says:

Navigation Pane View - Although FrontPage Server
Extensions are not required on local drive during
development, they are required on the server at
browse time for navigation bar support. While still
in Page view, you can display your site navigation
structure instead of the usual Folder list.

So, OK, I can understand where the Navigation *Pane* needs
the extensions if you want to develop directly on the
remote server. But I still don't see where the finished
site would need the extensions. In the finished site, Nav
bars are just rollover pictures and hyperlinks; there's
no reason those would need the server extensions.

The big problem is that if you change a theme or change
your Nav view diagram locally, it's *very* hard to know
which files you should upload via your external FTP program.
A single Nav view change could affect the link bars on
dozens of pages, for example, and you'd have to upload
all of those page, plus any new button pictures FrontPage
created. But if you get all the required files uploaded,
the Nav bars should work without the server extensions.
