Hi all,

I installed SP 2 on my home machine which is connects to the Internet by
ADSL Modem. I have a laptop which connects to my home computer by crossover
cable to connect to the internet. Laptop does not have SP2 Installed.

After rebooting my home machine it informs that i have "Limited or
no Connectivity". After trying to repair the connection, it then tells me it
was "Unable to Renew the IP Address".

I am now unable to connect to the internet, receive my emails, able to print
or access files on my home machine off of the laptop.

I have tried disabling the Firewall as i thought this may be the problem but
to no avail.

Can Someone Help me.

Cheers

Andrew

Andrew,

since when do you have this problem? Did this setup ever work
before?

This is normal and no cause for concern. The computer is merely
telling you that that network is not directly connectable to the
Internet. Should still work though, even including Internet
access from the laptop.
After trying to repair the connection, it then tells me it
was "Unable to Renew the IP Address".

What settings do you have for TCP/IP on both computers? They
should both be set to automatic, no IP address, no other
settings, no alternate settings.
I am now unable to connect to the internet, receive my emails, able to print
or access files on my home machine off of the laptop.

That's brave. Now you probably have to clean your computers of
spyware and viruses. Use SpyBot for a start and run an
up-to-date virus scanner. Average survival time before infection
without firewall is currently 16 minutes. SP2 may have stretched
it a little, but you really want to have that firewall enabled.

In the firewall enable the exception for File and Printer
Sharing. For good measure make sure that you don't allow Guest
access and make sure you use a password that's not in a
dictionary, has at least 7 characters, and contains at least one
special character other than a digit or a letter.

Alternatively enter the following IP address range for this
exception: 169.254.0.0/255.255.0.0

Make sure the laptop doesn't have its firewall enabled on the
LAN connection.

If this doesn't lead to success, please read

If this doesn't lead to success either, please copy the
selections line below the form after filling in the form and
post it here, and your problem will be solved quickly.
