This is the error message that I get on my LAN connection of my new
wireless laptop. I can connect to the network wirelessly fine. Is that
all I need or should I be able to also connect with an ethernet cable at
the same time? Do they each need a different IP address? I've installed
the patch of windows xp sp2 and run winsockfix.exe but still get this
message. I'm using a D-Link DI524 router to which I have three desktops
connected with cables. I have a hub connected to the fourth port and the
laptop plugged into the hub along with a printer server.

Isn't this like disconnecting a warning light on your dashboard? The
light no longer bothers you but the problem didn't go away. The last
ling on this help page read....

Note This does not resolve an issue. It just turns the message off.

Yes. You should be able to connect to the Internet and to any
devices on your local network.
or should I be able to also connect
with an ethernet cable at the same time?

Yes. There is no real benefit in having both at the same time, but
it should work OK. Windows will choose one of the connections and
ignore the other.
Do they each need a different IP address?

Yes. Assuming each adapter is set up to request a dynamic address,
and there is a DHCP server available, each will acquire an IP
address. In your case, the DHCP server will be the wireless router
- unless you have tweaked some settings?
I've installed the patch of windows xp sp2

Your LAN port is not receiving an IP address assignment within a
reasonable time so XP assigns it an APIPA and hence you see the
warning message.

Suggest you try some tests:
1) Switch off the wireless adapter on your laptop.
2) Do you get a connection via the wired LAN port?
3) Disconnect the hub from the router and wire-connect the laptop
directly to the router.
4) Do you get a connection via the wired LAN port?
