Light Scribe not recognized by applications

J

Jim Hauser

Hello all,

I have a new off-the-shelf system with a LiteOn light scribe cd/dvd burner.
(SOHW 1633S)

In all respects it seems to burn OK and it is recognized by that name in
BIOS and in the device manager.

However, when I try to burn a label using several different products it
comes back and says that a "light scribe device is not found."

It's not a major issue but it would be nice if it worked.

BTW. I am not using the software supplied with the computer - it sucked so I
formated the main drive and installed my own stuff (recover partition is
still intact.)

Any ideas or more info needed?

TIA

Jim

You must reverse the CD and place it upside down in your burner drive.
Make sure you are using a LightScribe disk.

Thanks Carey,

But I am aware of that aspect. I suppose some folks may not be.

After flipping the disk the application software says that there is no light
scribe drive on the system. I'm thinking that a driver or support program is
missing.

I'm thinking that maybe you "should" use the software supplied with the
drive, and not one of your choosing. If the correct drivers and software are
not installed, how is the computer to know that you don't have a plain
"vanilla" CD/DVD burner?

You might need to
i) update the software
ii) update the firmware on the dvd burner

Thanks Gary,

I have updated the firmware to the BPSA version from LiteOn but am unable to
find any newer software from HP or other vendors.

Thanks Richard,

XP does recognize the drive by name. I tried using the OEM setup with the
same results. I also downloaded the "latest" host software supplied by Sonic
and also the latest firmware revison from HP.

Also followed the advice to jumper the drive to master instead of cable
select and made sure it was the only device on the channel.

As it turns out, I'm not the only one having problems.

(LiteOn SOHW-1633S, BPSA firmware on a Presario SR1620NX running XP Pro SP2)

If the fix comes in from elsewhere I'll post the details here as this seems
to be a fairly active group.

Jim:
Are you absolutely sure your LiteOn SOHW 1633S supports LightScribe
labeling? I may be wrong, but I was under the impression that unit does
*not* have LightScribe capability.

According to LiteOn, your particular Model SOHW - 1633S
specifications do not even mention LightScribe capability or support.

That is a big 104! After checking all the specs I could find.

(How embarrasing.)

It appears that I was misled by the young salesman at Staples. That and my
eyes getting older and not correctly identifying the logo on the drive door.

Oh well.

Good call y'all..... I still have a pretty decent burner.

(How do I show a red face in an emoticon?) :)

Cheers and many thanks anyway..

"BLUSH!"

It seems that you, and several other folks, are correct.

Thanks anyway.

This looks like a good group of folks so I'll hang around and see what is
going on.

I've been building my own boxes since 40 megahertz was the king of the crop.

But, I was tossed a curve ball when Hurricane Katrina put four foot of water
in my house. The brine ate up the gold plating on the processer pins and
ruined them along with most of the other components. Saved the hard drives
but had to install them in off-the-shelf systems due to logistics.

(How I miss my Athlon 64s with 1.5 to 2 gigs of memory and dual 256 meg
graphics cards per system.)

At any rate, and just my personal opinion, off-the-shelf comes up short.

Oh, but thanks so much from all of you for your help.

Cheers!
