Can someone clarify for me user licensing in Windows
2000? I wish to use Novell's DirXML product to
synchronize accounts between NetWare 6 and Win2000 but
want to ensure I understand the licensing implications.

The accounts would reside in AD.

Is the licensing based on concurrent licensing (ie.
simultaneous logged in users) or user accounts existing in
AD?

You can license a 2000/2003 server in two ways:

Per Server licensing is based on concurrent sessions to a single server. So
if you have 10 total users hitting one 2000 server, but only 5 users will be
connecting at any given time, you can buy 5 licenses in "Per Server" mode.
However, if you then add 2 additional servers to your infrastructure, you'll
need to purchase another 5 licenses for -each- server. (In our example,
you're up to 15 licenses.)

Per Seat licensing is based on your number of workstations that will be
connecting to your network, and is not dependent on how many different
servers they would be connecting to. So in our previous example with 10
users and 3 servers, you can configure Per Seat licensing for 10 users
(instead of 15 for per server.)

Your local reseller can also give you specific information for your network
configuration, rather than just speaking in generalities.
