Licensing TS

I

Ilia

I have a terminal server installed on 2000 server and an the same server I
have installed and activated a TS Licensing server.
When I go to check the licenses through the MMC of the TS Licensing server I
see that there are 4 temp licenses issued to 4 different workstations (By
the way all the workstations that will use terminal services are W2k Pro)
and they will expire in 90 days from now.

Does it mean that we need to buy permanent TS CALs after this 90-day period
or the temp licenses will be renewed at that time?
Since all the workstations operate on W2K Pro I would assume that we do not
need to buy permanent licenses.
Is there any risk of having the terminal server license expire after 90
days?
If so what would be the remedy?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Ilia

The only other workaround is to install your W2K Terminal Server
*not* as a member server of the W2K domain, but in a NT 4.0 domain
or in a separate workgroup. When a W2K TS runs in a workgroup, you
can install the Licensing service on the TS itself.
You might experience problems with user profiles, home directories
and so on, though.

you must install and activate a TS Licensing server, since
the W2K Pro and XP Pro clients get their free TS CALs from the LS.

Are you sure you've activated your license server? If not, that would
explain the temporary licenses.

If not, are you sure they're from the temporary pool, not the permanent
pool? If they're permanent, you're fine.

When the temp licenses expire, the client won't be able to connect.

Thanks for writing back Bob.
I have activated the TS Licensing server and I am attaching a bmp file with
4 shots that explains the situation.
The workstations that are given the temporary CALs are running W2K Pro.

Any other suggestions?

Thank you.

A question, how were you able to activate the TS licensing
without a valid MS activation key?
Am I missing something>

Sorry for that.
I just realized that the bitmap file was too large for the news server to
allow it.
This is the link for the file http://www.pcnservices.com/ts/licenses.bmp
You can have a look at it.

Anyway I was able to fix the problem thanks to your FAQ link.
I deleted the temp TS cal from all 4 client workstations and reconnected
again. The licenses now are in the non expiration pool.

This is the link on how to delete the TS License from the client
workstation.
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;q248430

I think that those temp licenses were issued before the activation of the TS
Licensing Server. The PIN took a while to come to my mailbox and I logged on
the TS before the activation. When I logged from another workstation I saw
that the license issued to it did not have any expiration date. So I went to
the terminal server FAQ link and the problem was solved.

Thank again Bob. I appreciate your help.

The PIN was e-mailed to me by Microsoft. My problem was that before
activating the server I had logged on from 4 Clients. It took about half an
hour to get the PIN.After I activated the server the licenses showed up in
the temp pool.
