Licensing Question

Our small business has 1 licensed copy of ms access 2003. Currently only
one user has been using our software and thats our developer and it seems
like more users in the future will need access to use the database that he
has developed. Is there a way to deploy access to multiple worstations by
only using a single licensed copy? Or will I need to purchase multiple
licenses?

You cannot simply install Access on the server: it must be installed on each
workstation.

If the users need to be able to make design changes to the application
(i.e.: change forms or reports), then you need to purchase a full version of
Access for each user. End of discussion.

If the users do not need to be able to make design changes, but simply use
the application that you've built for them, you can purchase a royalty-free
runtime version of Access.

You need to purchase the following in order to create an Access 2003 runtime
application:

- Microsoft Access 2003
- Visual Studio Tools for Office 2005 (which includes the Access 2003
Developer Extensions)

The ADE is the product that gives you the license to deploy the 2003 runtime
components and you have to have Access 2003 installed in order to install
the ADE.

See http://msdn.microsoft.com/office/understanding/vsto/default.aspx for
more details, or
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/assistance/HA011208861033.aspx

Realistically, though, VSTO is seldom worth the effort unless you've got at
least 10 or 15 users.

I have another option to those find ideas presented by Doug Steele.

If the other users' needs for the database are somewhat simple, you could
create Data Access Pages and let them access (pardon the pun) the database
through a web browser. They could look up data; run some reports; and even do
data entry.
